ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is the material for anything that lives outside in Florida sun and heat. Where PLA fails at 60°C and PETG gets soft above 75°C, ASA holds its shape up to 95-100°C and resists UV degradation that would yellow and embrittle PLA or ABS within months of outdoor exposure. If you have a print that needs to survive a South Florida summer outdoors — a mailbox number plate, an outdoor camera mount, a garden plant label, marine hardware — ASA is the correct material and the only serious FDM option in that use case.
ASA vs ABS: Why ASA Wins for Outdoor Use
ASA and ABS share similar printing requirements: high temperatures, enclosed printer preferred, warping tendency without a heated chamber. The meaningful difference is UV resistance. ABS yellows and becomes brittle after 6-12 months of direct sun exposure. ASA maintains its color and mechanical properties for 3-5+ years in the same conditions. For anything intended for permanent outdoor use, ASA is simply the correct choice over ABS.
ASA also has slightly better chemical resistance than ABS, relevant for outdoor objects that see rain, cleaning chemicals, or fuel.
ASA Print Settings
| Setting | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle temperature | 240-260°C | Higher end of range for better layer adhesion |
| Bed temperature | 90-110°C | High bed temp critical for adhesion and warp prevention |
| Enclosure | Required for large prints | P2S, H2S, H2D naturally enclosed. A1/A1 Mini: use an enclosure tent. |
| Fan speed | 0-20% | Minimal cooling. ASA warps severely with aggressive cooling. |
| Print speed | 40-80mm/s outer wall | Slower than PLA. ASA needs time for layer fusion at high temps. |
| Bed adhesion | Smooth PEI + glue stick OR garolite | Garolite G10 sheet is the gold standard for ASA bed adhesion |
eSUN ASA filament is a reliable ASA formulation with good UV stabilizer content. Available in white, black, and grey — the three most practical outdoor colors. Bright colors in ASA fade slightly faster than neutral tones outdoors, so white and black are the best long-term outdoor choices.
Printer Requirements for ASA
ASA needs an all-metal hotend (no PTFE in the heat zone) for sustained 250-260°C printing. A standard Bambu Lab A1 brass nozzle can handle ASA but check the hotend spec for PTFE tube proximity to the heated zone.
For best results with large ASA prints, the enclosed printers in the Bambu Lab line (P2S, H2S, H2D) are ideal because the enclosure maintains ambient temperature. The Creality K2 Plus also handles ASA reliably with its enclosed chamber, giving the additional benefit of 350mm build volume for large outdoor structural prints.
