MTG formats differ in card count and how decks are transported, and those differences directly affect deck box dimensions. A Standard deck box is compact. A Commander box is significantly larger. A Pioneer deck with sideboard needs a format the player will rarely use at most tables. Understanding the format-by-format dimensional requirements before designing or selecting a deck box prevents the frustrating situation of printing a box that’s slightly the wrong size for how you actually play.
Format Dimensions at a Glance
| Format | Main deck | Sideboard | Total cards | Box interior depth (Dragon Shield Matte) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard / Modern | 60 | 15 | 75 | 41mm |
| Commander (100-card) | 100 | 0 | 100 | 55mm |
| Pioneer / Legacy | 60 | 15 | 75 | 41mm |
| Oathbreaker | 58 | 0 | 58 | 32mm |
| Draft cube | 360+ | — | 360+ | Multiple boxes or storage solution |
The Commander box is the design priority for most casual players because Commander is the dominant casual format and 100 cards needs a box large enough to be worth designing carefully. Standard and Pioneer boxes are simpler because 75 cards including sideboard is a compact footprint.
Should a Deck Box Hold the Sideboard?
For tournament play: yes. The sideboard travels with the deck and needs to be in the box. A 75-card box with a separate sideboard compartment is more practical than carrying two separate boxes.
For Commander: sideboard doesn’t exist in the format. A Commander box sized for exactly 100 sleeved cards is cleaner and more compact than oversizing for cards you’ll never need.
The OreKo Approach: Format-Specific Boxes
Every OreKo deck box in the catalog specifies which sleeve type and format it’s designed for. The Commander series is sized for 100 Dragon Shield Matte cards. The Standard series fits 75 Dragon Shield cards. The double-sleeve variants add 2mm in each dimension to the single-sleeve version. Browse the full lineup at Cults3D.
For printing, eSUN Matte PLA in any color works. Print the calibration test card slot first: a simple U-channel 69mm wide that you can test with actual sleeved cards before printing the full box.
