A single-compartment deck box holds cards. A multi-compartment deck box holds a complete gaming session: the deck, tokens, dice, a life counter, and spare sleeves, all in one organized container. Designing the compartments requires knowing what each item’s dimensions actually are and how to fit them together without making the overall box too large to be practical. This guide covers the design approach for the most useful multi-compartment configurations.
Reference Dimensions for Common Accessories
| Item | Dimensions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 16mm dice (6-sided) | 16x16x16mm | A 5×5 dice tray holds 25 dice in 80x80mm footprint |
| Spindown D20 (20mm) | 20mm diameter | Circular recess 22mm diameter, 12mm deep |
| Token cards (same as game cards) | 63x88mm sleeved | Same slot dimensions as main deck |
| Sleeve pack (100 Dragon Shield) | 70x95x8mm | Fits alongside deck with 8mm side compartment |
| Commander life tracker dial | Varies ~50-80mm | Measure your specific tracker before designing recess |
The Commander All-In-One Box Layout
The most requested multi-compartment configuration for Commander play: 100-card main deck + token slot + dice tray + spindown recess.
Layout from bottom of box to top:
- Bottom section (30mm tall): Dice tray with 3mm raised walls between dice and card zone
- Middle section (60mm tall): Main deck (100 sleeved cards, 55mm deep in Dragon Shield Matte)
- Side channel (8mm wide): Sleeve pack storage running full height alongside the deck compartment
- Lid interior: Spindown D20 recess plus small token card slot (20 tokens, 11mm deep)
Total external dimensions approximately 90mm wide x 100mm tall x 80mm deep. Fits in a backpack side pocket. Print in two pieces: body and lid. eSUN Matte PLA for the body. Consider printing the dice tray section in a contrasting accent color using the AMS if available.
Design Tip: Model Bottom-Up
In TinkerCAD or Blender, design the interior layout first by placing reference boxes at the correct dimensions for each item. Then build the outer walls around these reference boxes. This ensures every compartment is correctly sized before you finalize the outer dimensions, rather than discovering a clearance problem after the outer box is modeled.
