Most 3D printers fail from neglect rather than age. The maintenance tasks that prevent 90% of long-term reliability problems take less than 30 minutes per month combined. This guide breaks down every maintenance task by frequency: after every print, weekly, monthly, and every few months. Follow this schedule and your printer will run cleanly for years. Skip it and you’ll rebuild more often than you print.
After Every Print Session
Clean the build plate. Wipe with IPA on a lint-free cloth before the next print. Fingerprint oils from removing the previous print are invisible but prevent adhesion. Takes 30 seconds. Skipping this is the most common cause of adhesion failures on otherwise-working printers.
Return filament to sealed storage. Especially important in South Florida. Remove the spool from the printer or AMS bay and return it to an airtight container with desiccant. Filament left loaded in an open-frame printer absorbs ambient humidity continuously. An hour in South Florida summer air degrades sensitive materials like PETG and TPU noticeably.
Check for debris around the nozzle. Burnt filament residue on the outside of the nozzle accumulates over time and can fall onto prints. A quick wipe with a brass wire brush (cold) or careful wipe while hot removes it before it builds up.
Weekly (or Every 5-10 Print Hours)
Inspect the PTFE tube (Bowden setups only). The PTFE tube from extruder to hotend degrades over time, especially near the nozzle where it sees high temperatures. Signs of degradation: cracking, yellowing, or a visible gap between the PTFE end and the nozzle seat. A degraded PTFE tube causes jams. Replace when in doubt.
Check for play in the axes. Gently push and pull on the print head in X, Y, and Z. There should be no perceptible play or rocking. Linear rails (Bambu Lab, Voron) have very low play when well-lubricated. Traditional linear rods and bearings develop play as bearings wear. Address early rather than after the slop affects print quality.
Listen to your printer. Novel sounds (grinding, clicking, squealing) during a print session that weren’t present before are diagnostic signals. Clicking from the extruder usually means partial clog or excessive retraction. Grinding from an axis usually means a bearing or rod issue. Squealing usually means a dry bearing or belt tension problem.
Monthly Maintenance Tasks
Run a cold pull. Load a cleaning filament (or PLA if you don’t have dedicated cleaning filament), heat to printing temperature, push through a short length, cool to 90°C, pull the filament out firmly. Lubricate linear rails or rods. Bambu Lab X-series and H-series printers use linear rails that need a drop of PTFE-compatible lubricant on each rail monthly. A-series printers use linear rods with bearings that benefit from a thin coating of PTFE grease. Apply sparingly, move the axis through full travel to distribute. Do not use WD-40 (it displaces moisture but isn’t a bearing lubricant).
Check and clean the extruder gear. The extruder drive gear bites into filament to push it. Filament debris accumulates in the gear teeth over time and reduces grip. Use a stiff brush or compressed air to clean the gear teeth while at ambient temperature. On Bambu Lab printers this is accessible through the side panel with the printer powered down.
Recharge desiccant. The indicating silica gel in your filament storage containers changes color when saturated. In South Florida summer, check monthly and recharge (oven at 120°C for 2 hours) when the indicator shows saturation.
Run full calibration on Bambu Lab printers. Bambu Studio and the printer touchscreen offer a full calibration sequence (vibration compensation, flow dynamics, first layer). Running this monthly or after any printer move keeps all automatic parameters current.
Every 3-6 Months
Replace the nozzle. Brass nozzles on standard PLA have a lifespan of roughly 3-6 months of regular use before orifice wear affects print quality. Hardened steel nozzles last significantly longer on standard materials. Replace proactively rather than waiting for quality to degrade noticeably.
Inspect and replace the build plate if needed. PEI surfaces develop damage over time from removal tools, heavy prints, and accumulated micro-scratches. A damaged PEI surface causes uneven adhesion. Most PEI plates are reversible (use the other side) and replaceable individually rather than needing the whole magnetic base.
Check belt tension. FDM printers with belt-driven axes (Bambu Lab A-series, most Cartesian printers) have belts that can stretch or loosen over time. A loose belt produces ringing, ghosting, and dimensional inaccuracy. Most modern printers have a belt tension check procedure in their calibration menu. For Bambu Lab A-series: Settings > Calibration > Belt Tension Check.
Inspect the hotend assembly. Check for any filament leaks around the heatbreak or nozzle junction. A leak shows up as accumulated charred filament around the hotend. Tighten connections or replace heat block and nozzle if leakage is found.
Update firmware. Printer firmware updates often include improvements to calibration routines, motion control, and bug fixes. Check for updates on the manufacturer’s website or through the printer’s software (Bambu Studio checks automatically).
