Cleaning a Bambu Lab nozzle is a routine maintenance task that takes 5-10 minutes and resolves most partial clog and underextrusion issues. Bambu’s proprietary hotend makes the process slightly different from standard FDM nozzle cleaning, but it’s still straightforward once you know the steps.
Method 1: Bambu Studio’s Built-In Clean Function
The easiest starting point. In Bambu Studio with your printer connected, go to the Device tab, select your printer, and look for the maintenance or nozzle cleaning option. Heat the hotend to 250°C (higher than normal print temp to burn off residue), push 50-100mm of filament through manually, then perform a cold pull at 90°C. This resolves most partial clogs from carbonized material or transition residue from filament swaps.
Method 2: Manual Cold Pull
Heat to 250°C. Push 30mm of filament through by hand. Drop temperature to 90°C. At 90°C, pull the filament out in one firm smooth motion. The tip should show a clean impression of the nozzle interior. Repeat until the pulled tip comes out clean without dark specks or rough texture. Replace the nozzle if cold pulls don’t clean it after 4-5 attempts. Full nozzle replacement and when to do it is covered at the nozzle guide.
Frequently Asked Questions: Cleaning a Bambu Nozzle
How often should I clean my Bambu Lab nozzle?
Clean reactively when you notice underextrusion, clicking from the extruder, or rough surface texture. Proactive cleaning after running abrasive filaments (CF PLA, glow) is also good practice. Most PLA printing doesn’t require routine cleaning more than every few months.
Can I use a needle to clean my Bambu Lab nozzle?
Yes, carefully. A 0.4mm acupuncture needle pushed through the nozzle at print temperature can dislodge stubborn blockages. Always do this with the nozzle at temperature, never cold. The needle goes into the nozzle tip while the hotend is fully heated.
When should I replace rather than clean?
If cold pulls don’t resolve the issue after 4-5 attempts, or if extrusion quality has gradually declined over months despite cleaning, replacement is more efficient than continued cleaning. Bambu Lab replacement nozzles are available directly from their store.
