Horns, fangs, creature teeth, prosthetic ears, pointed claws, and ridge features are the detail elements that elevate a costume from clearly human-with-accessories to genuinely unsettling creature. FDM handles all of these well. The challenge is making them wearable and durable, not making them look right — that part is straightforward once you understand how each feature attaches and what material works best for each type.
Horns: Design and Attachment
A printed horn that glues directly to skin with spirit gum needs to be lightweight and have a broad base plate that maximizes adhesion surface. Design horns with a flat oval base plate 25-35mm wide that sits flush against the skin surface. The horn itself tapers from this base to the tip. Print in PLA at 3 walls, 10% infill for weight reduction. Sand the base plate smooth for clean spirit gum adhesion.
For headband-mounted horns (faster, no skin adhesive needed): add a slot in the base that accepts a standard headband width. The horn slides over the headband and is secured with a drop of hot glue that’s easily removed after the event.
eSUN Matte PLA in black or dark grey gives a great base for demon or creature horns. Add a coat of Rub-n-Buff in silver or copper for a weathered organic horn appearance.
Creature Teeth and Fangs
Fangs that slip over existing teeth (dental veneer style) are the most common application. Print in natural or cream PLA, 0.12mm layer height for smooth surface, 100% infill for solid feel. The fang needs a recess that matches the existing tooth shape — measure the target tooth with dental putty or a thick impression compound, then model the fang recess to fit.
For non-wearable display teeth (skull props, creature busts): print at 0.2mm, any infill, paint with cream and bone tones.
Ear Tips and Prosthetic Ridge Features
Elf ears, Vulcan ears, elf tips that extend real ears — these require the piece to match the wearer’s own ear color after painting, which is the hardest part. Print in natural PLA, prime with flesh-toned gesso, paint to match skin tone with acrylic. Attach with prosthetics-grade adhesive (Pros-Aide) for extended wear. TPU printed ear tips are more comfortable than PLA for all-day wearing but harder to paint.
Spinal ridge features for creature bodysuit effects: print individual ridge segments in TPU for flexibility, attach to a spandex backing panel with contact cement. The TPU segments flex with the wearer’s back movement while the spandex provides the garment attachment.
