A real pumpkin rots. A store-bought plastic pumpkin looks like a store-bought plastic pumpkin. A 3D printed geometric lantern, ghost frame, or light diffuser is something that doesn’t exist in any retail store and looks genuinely custom. The November after Halloween you’re still proud of it rather than throwing it away. These are the light-based Halloween prints that work best as FDM alternatives to the carved pumpkin tradition.
Geometric Lanterns
A dodecahedron or icosahedron shell in translucent or white PLA with a candle inside is one of the most visually striking FDM Halloween decorations possible. The geometric face planes catch and project light in different intensities depending on the angle, creating a dynamic ambient lighting effect that looks intentionally designed.
Print with 0.8-1.2mm wall thickness (2 walls on a 0.4mm nozzle) in natural or white eSUN PLA. The thinner walls allow maximum light transmission. The geometric corners at each edge create natural shadow lines that enhance the faceted look.
Ghost Frames and Silhouettes
A ghost silhouette frame is a flat outline of a classic ghost shape with open negative space between the outer and inner edges. Hung in a window with a string light behind it, the solid outline is visible in daylight, and at night the frame captures and diffuses the string light glow. Print in matte white PLA at 3-4mm thick with a 5mm wall border width.
Scale to your window dimensions. A 400mm tall ghost silhouette is visually impactful from outside. Print in sections and join with alignment pegs if needed for larger windows.
Pumpkin Alternative Lanterns
A printed pumpkin lantern replaces the real pumpkin with a permanent seasonal piece. Design considerations: the pumpkin shape needs the face as negative space cut-through (as covered in Oct 4), an open bottom for inserting the LED, and ventilation gaps near the top since enclosed LEDs generate heat in a fully sealed shell. A ring of 4-6mm holes near the stem area handles ventilation naturally as part of the design.
