N52 neodymium magnets change what cosplay armor closures are capable of. A magnetic closure snaps cleanly from 10-15mm away, holds firmly during active wear, and releases with one hand without fumbling. For armor that needs to come on and off quickly, attach cleanly for photos, or travel disassembled for packing, embedded magnets are more reliable and more professional-looking than velcro, snaps, or buckles. This guide covers the right magnets, how to embed them during printing, and where they work best in a cosplay build.
Choosing the Right Magnets
N52 disc magnets, 6mm diameter x 2mm thick. These are the workhorses of cosplay magnet closures. Strong enough to hold a medium armor panel against movement, small enough to embed in a 3-4mm printed wall, and cheap enough to use liberally (typically $8-12 for 50 pieces on Amazon). For heavier panels or stronger closures, step up to 8mm x 3mm or 10mm x 3mm discs.
Pull force comparison: a 6x2mm N52 magnet has approximately 1.2kg pull force directly against a steel or matching magnet surface. Two opposing magnets (one in each mating piece) double that to approximately 2.4kg. For a pauldron that weighs 80-100g, two magnet pairs per closure point is more than sufficient.
Designing Magnet Recesses in the Model
In Blender or TinkerCAD, add a cylindrical recess to the mating surface of each piece: 6.2mm diameter (0.2mm clearance), 2.2mm deep for a 6x2mm magnet. The slight clearance allows the magnet to seat flush without requiring a press fit that might crack the print. The recess depth positions the magnet face exactly at the surface level for maximum pull force at the joint.
Add the recess on the back (non-cosmetic) face of the armor piece. Position magnet pairs symmetrically on both mating pieces so polarity aligns automatically. Critical: verify polarity before gluing. Mark the top of each magnet with a paint pen before embedding. The two mating pieces need opposite poles facing each other. Same poles repel and the closure won’t work.
When printing, pause the print at the layer just above the recess base (use Bambu Studio’s layer pause feature), insert the magnet, and resume. The subsequent layers print over and seal the magnet in place with no glue needed.
Best Locations for Magnetic Closures in Cosplay
- Pauldron to chest/back plate junction: Two magnet pairs per shoulder. The pauldron snaps on cleanly for photos and releases for comfortable transport.
- Helmet chin strap: Instead of a buckle, two magnets at each side of the chin bar. Quick on/off for con floor without disturbing hair or makeup.
- Rear mask to hood (like Liliya’s build): Four magnet pairs at corners. Holds the mask flat against the back of the head through head turns.
- Gauntlet cuff: The cuff opens magnetically on one side, allowing the hand to pass through, then snaps closed. Far easier than traditional buckles while wearing gloves.
- Boot armor over-sole: Attaches the printed armor plate to the boot without permanent modification to the boot itself.
