PLA Is the Right Filament for Dollhouse Furniture
The dollhouse miniature hobby has a reputation for requiring expensive tools and specialist materials. When it comes to 3D printed furniture, the opposite is true. The best filament for almost every dollhouse piece is the cheapest and most common one: standard PLA.
Here is why PLA works so well for this specific application, plus the tips and color choices that make the difference between a print that looks like a prototype and one that looks like real furniture.
Why PLA Suits Dollhouse Work
Dollhouse furniture lives indoors, in a controlled environment, and does not take mechanical stress. That means the advantages of PETG or ABS (heat resistance, flexibility, toughness) simply are not needed. PLA’s properties are actually ideal for this use case:
Surface quality. PLA holds fine detail better than PETG at equivalent layer heights. For raised panel lines, decorative trim, and appliance surface texture, PLA produces cleaner results.
Rigidity. PLA is stiffer than PETG. For thin-walled miniature furniture, that stiffness means pieces hold their shape without flex. A PLA window frame does not bow or warp over time indoors.
Color range. PLA comes in a wider range of colors than any other FDM filament. For furniture, this matters. Appliance white, wood tones, stone greys, brass golds, and architectural creams are all available in PLA.
Low stringing. PLA strings less than PETG at fine scales. On small miniature pieces, even thin strings inside a window opening or between furniture legs require cleanup. PLA keeps this to a minimum.

Color Choices for Realistic Miniature Furniture
Choosing the right PLA color before printing can reduce or eliminate the need to paint. Here are the colors that work best for common miniature furniture categories:
Appliances (refrigerators, stoves, washers): White or light grey PLA. Bambu brand white PLA at 0.16mm produces a very clean appliance surface finish.
Wooden furniture: Natural or tan PLA for light wood. Brown or walnut-tone filaments for dark wood. These approximate real wood tones and can be enhanced with a light acrylic wash to add grain texture.
Window frames and trim: White or cream PLA. Classic and versatile for any period of dollhouse style.
Shutters: Print separately in a contrasting color. Dark green, deep blue, or terracotta against white frames is a traditional combination that looks great at miniature scale.
Balcony railings: White, cream, or wrought-iron black depending on the architectural style of the build.
Decorative planters: Terracotta or earthy red PLA for the most realistic appearance. Sand lightly after printing for a ceramic-like texture.
Silk PLA: Worth Considering for Display Pieces
Silk PLA is a variant with a subtle metallic or satin sheen that makes printed surfaces look smoother and more finished than standard matte PLA. For miniature furniture pieces that will be prominently displayed or photographed, silk PLA at 0.12mm produces results that genuinely surprise people.
The sheen catches light in a way that downplays layer lines further, and the surface has a quality that reads as more polished and intentional. Silk PLA works particularly well for:
- White appliances where surface cleanliness is critical
- Metallic-toned pieces (brass, bronze, chrome fixtures)
- Any piece where you want a finished, store-bought appearance
Silk PLA prints at roughly the same settings as standard PLA. Reduce temperature by 5°C and slow print speed by 10-15% for the cleanest results.
Quick Finishing Techniques That Elevate PLA Miniatures
Even a clean PLA print benefits from a little post-print attention. These techniques require minimal tools and experience:
Light sanding on flat panels. 400-grit sandpaper on flat surfaces like appliance doors and cabinet faces smooths layer lines significantly. Three minutes of gentle sanding and the surface looks injection-molded. Always sand before painting, never after.
Acrylic wash for wood grain. On tan or brown PLA furniture, brush a thinned dark brown or raw umber acrylic wash over the surface and wipe off with a cloth before it dries fully. The wash settles in the layer line texture and simulates wood grain remarkably well.
Gloss varnish for appliances. A coat of clear gloss varnish over an appliance-white piece adds the sheen real appliances have. Use spray varnish for the most even application.
Flat varnish for fabric. If printing upholstered miniature furniture in PLA, a matte flat varnish breaks the plastic appearance and makes it read more like fabric.
