Does Filament Choice Actually Matter for Deck Boxes?
Yes, but probably not as much as you think. For deck boxes, the material choice is less critical than it is for outdoor parts or mechanical components. Card game accessories live indoors, do not experience high heat, and do not take structural stress. That narrows the decision down to a few practical factors.
PLA: The Right Choice for Most Deck Boxes
PLA is the correct filament for printing deck boxes in almost every situation. It prints easily, comes in hundreds of colors, holds its shape under normal indoor use, and produces clean surfaces that are ideal for logo caps and artwork.
Why PLA works:
- Easy to print on any FDM printer
- Low stringing — clean interiors without post-processing
- Excellent surface quality for logo detail
- Available in every color imaginable
- $15-25 per kg — a deck box uses less than 100g
- Rigid enough to protect cards reliably
For OreKo deck boxes, every sample print and all recommended settings are based on standard PLA. If you are unsure, PLA is the answer.
PETG: When It Makes Sense
PETG is worth considering if your deck box will regularly see heat. If you leave your bag in a hot car, take your cards to outdoor events in summer, or play in warm climates where the inside of a car can hit 60°C+, PETG is a meaningful upgrade.
PETG starts to soften around 80°C versus PLA’s 60°C, which provides meaningful extra margin for heat exposure. It is also slightly more impact resistant, which could matter if your bag takes a fall.
The trade-off is stringing. PETG produces fine plastic strings between travel moves that can end up inside the box cavity. You will need to clean these out before your cards go in. Not a deal-breaker, but extra work compared to PLA.

Color Choice: This Is Where It Gets Fun
For deck boxes, color choice is as important as material choice because this is a display item. A few combinations that work well:
Black base, gold or white logo cap: The most versatile combination. Works for every One Piece and MTG theme.
Dark navy base, silver cap: Clean and premium-looking for Commander decks.
Red base, black Jolly Roger cap: Classic One Piece Straw Hat crew aesthetic.
White or grey base, colored cap: Lets the logo color pop without competing with the box.
With a Bambu AMS, the color switch happens automatically. Without AMS, print box and cap separately in your two chosen colors.
